2024 Carabao Cup final: Pochettino cautions officials on Liverpool bias concern

Mauricio Pochettino has emphasized the need for “fairness” from the officials overseeing Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, cautioning against their susceptibility to the sentiment surrounding Jürgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool.

In a bid to heighten the psychological aspect of the game, Chelsea’s head coach urged Chris Kavanagh, the designated referee for the Carabao Cup final, to administer impartial treatment to both competing teams.

Pochettino alluded to instances where Chelsea was denied two penalties during their recent 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, expressing his desire to prevent external factors from unduly complicating his team’s task at Wembley.

Pochettino’s remarks arose in response to questions regarding the potential added pressure on Liverpool due to Klopp’s imminent departure. “Good question,” he responded. “It’s not pressure for him. Perhaps for those eager to revel with Liverpool. We must ensure we compete and uphold fairness in every decision.”

Reflecting on their previous encounter at Anfield, Pochettino highlighted perceived injustices, stating, “Too many decisions… not a single pivotal one favored us. Two penalties were overlooked. Duels, 50-50 challenges, always favored the opposing side. Always in red. I seek fair treatment. While we acknowledge Liverpool’s brilliance and Klopp’s stature as one of the best coaches globally, my aim at Wembley is to play without undue pressure.”

Chelsea was the first Premier League team to face Liverpool following the announcement about Klopp’s departure. Pochettino expressed his admiration for Liverpool and Klopp, asserting, “We will approach the game similarly, desiring equitable treatment and recognition for both clubs.”

Responding to speculation about Chelsea spoiling the celebration, Pochettino clarified, “No, we aim to win for Chelsea. Undoubtedly, Liverpool desires victory too. However, external celebrations surrounding Klopp’s departure should not influence the game.”

Carabao Cup injury update

The Carabao Cup final at Wembley might see Silva absent alongside Benoit Badiashile, Wesley Fofana, Reece James, and Marc Cucurella, leaving Pochettino with defensive limitations. Additionally, midfielders Carney Chukwuemeka, Romeo Lavia, and Lesley Ugochukwu are sidelined.

Liverpool faces a similar predicament with several key players unavailable, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota, and Alisson Becker. Late fitness tests await Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, and Dominik Szoboszlai.
