Argentina wins on penalties against hard-fighting Netherlands

Argentina clinched a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over the Netherlands.

The win keeps Argentina’s hope of a first World Cup since 1986 alive.

Argentina’s victory seals their place in the semi-finals on a dramatic night at the Lusail Stadium, Qatar.

The win sets up a last-four clash with Croatia for a place in the World Cup final.

Emiliano Martinez saved the first two Netherlands penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis.

While Lautaro Martinez scored the decisive spot-kick to ensure Argentina prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.

Enzo Fernandez had missed the chance to send his side through to the semi-final.

Argentina looked like running into the semis after Nahuel Molina opened the scoring in the 35th minute.

Lionel Messi added a second from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute and Netherlands were on their way out.

But substitute Wout Weghorst latched on to a delicious Steven Berghuis cross to head Netherlands back into the contest.

His goal in the 83rd minute was Netherlands’ first effort on target.

Weghorst again poked home from a brilliantly worked free-kick in the 10th minute of add-on time.

The two sides could not be separated after extra time at 2-2.

The Netherlands only registered two shots on target, albeit they scored with both.

Man of the match, Messi has now scored four and assisted two of Argentina’s nine goals at the World Cup.
