What are Google Doodles?

Have you ever opened google.com and seen an attractive Google logo drawing your attention? Yes, that is a Google Doodle.

Google Doodles are fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous. However, temporary changes are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists.

The first Google Doodle honoured the 1998 edition of the long-running annual Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada. It was designed by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they took a break to attend the Burning Man festival. The aim of the doodle was to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed.

The Doodle they created was simple, with the festival’s iconic stick man loitering behind the ‘O’, but users loved the playful addition to an otherwise simple logo.

Doodle for Google 2023

15 years after the launch of the annual Doodle for Google student art contest, Google opened their doors for the 2023 edition of the contest.

The 2023 Doodle for Google contest opened to students based in the United States, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands on the 14th of March.

This year’s contest prompt is “I am grateful for…”. This is to encourage students to take a step back from their busy lives to refocus on what’s most important to them. What moments, people, places and things are special to them? What or whom can they not imagine living without? What are the things that get them through the day?

The theme this year was aimed at promoting mental health by focusing on the positive impact of gratitude.

Out of the thousands of entries that would be received, the panel of judges will decide on 54 state and territory winners and five national finalists, one of whom will go on to be the National Grand Prize Winner.

The winning artist will have their work on the Google homepage for a day and receive a $30,000 college scholarship to the college of their choice, a T-shirt with their doodle, a Google Chromebook, and a Wacom digital design tablet. The winner’s school will receive a $50,000 technology grant.
