Europa League: Manchester United seeks European redemption

Manchester United will be seeking European redemption after the 7-0 humiliation they suffered at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday when they face Real Betis in the Europa League today.

Ten Hag said United must “reset and bounce back” against Real Betis in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie at Old Trafford on Thursday.

“We made a mess on Sunday but we are in the same boat,” he said.

“We win together and lose together.”

The defeat was United’s joint-heaviest in a competitive game, while victory was Liverpool’s biggest against their rivals.

Erik ten Hag confirmed that Bruno Fernandes will remain as captain, and says he will learn from his mistakes in the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Sporting vs Arsenal

Arsenal travel to Lisbon to face Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League.

The Premier League leaders flew into Portugal on Wednesday, but Arteta did not confirm Gabriel Jesus travelled with the squad.

When asked in Lisbon if the 25-year-old was also there, Arteta remained coy.

“We have brought a few players and you will see on Thursday who is available.”

Arteta says Jesus, who joined league leaders Arsenal last summer, will not be rushed back.

“We will try to make a fair assessment between what he needs and when he is comfortable.

“Everything is going well, he needs time as well to get himself that confidence and that physical state necessary to compete with a free mind, and once he’s free to do that, we will throw him in.”
