Frank Lampard is set to return to Chelsea as caretaker manager until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Lampard was manager of Chelsea for one-and-a-half years before he was sacked and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

He has been out of a job since January when he was sacked by Everton after less than a year in charge.

Lampard is expected to be in charge for Chelsea’s next game at Wolves on Saturday.

The London club is currently without a permanent head coach after Graham Potter was sacked last Sunday after seven months in charge following a poor run of results.

Bruno Saltor, who was previously part of Potter’s coaching staff at Brighton and then Chelsea, took charge of Chelsea’s 0-0 draw on Tuesday evening.

Lampard was at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night to watch the game just 48 hours after Graham Potter was sacked.

The 44-year-old Chelsea’s record goal scorer was dismissed as head coach at Stamford Bridge in January 2021.

Chelsea are 14 points outside the top four, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season.

They travel to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday and face Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on 12 April.

In his previous managerial spell at the club, Lampard guided Chelsea to the FA Cup final in his first season in charge, having joined from Derby County.

A potential caretaker move for Lampard comes after Chelsea held talks in London with former Barcelona and Spain boss Luis Enrique over their managerial vacancy.

The 52-year-old, who is out of work after leaving the Spain job following the World Cup, won the treble at Barcelona in 2014/15, lifting LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League.
