A lot of Prospective Corps Members, PCM often proceed to register for deployment on the NYSC portal without first confirming if their name is on the Senate list. This oftentimes ends up being unsuccessful, and they are left panicking and wondering what could have gone wrong.

The reason is actually very simple. You can only register for NYSC deployment when your name appears on the mobilisation or senate list.

What is NYSC?

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, is a 1-year mandatory service for all Nigerian graduates. It is an avenue for the reconciliation, reconstruction, and rebuilding of the nation after the civil war.

It was established on May 22 1973, under decree No.24, which stated that the scheme was created “with a view to the proper encouragement and development of common ties among the youth of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity”.

Corps members are posted to states other than their state of origin, where they are expected to mix with people from different social, cultural, and family backgrounds. They are expected to learn the culture of the indigenes in the location they are posted to.

This action aims to bring unity to the country and help the youth appreciate other ethnic groups.

There is usually an orientation period of about three weeks spent in a military-controlled camp. Also, there are orientation camps situated across all 36 states of the country. There is a passing out ceremony at the end of the three-week orientation.

The corp members are then posted to their Place of Primary Assignment, PPA, where they are expected to work as full-time staff with the exception of one working day dedicated to the execution of Community Development Service, CDS.

The NYSC program last eleven months, and the outgoing corp members are issued a certificate of completion during the final passing out ceremony.
