INEC RESPONDS TO ALLEGATIONS OF 7 MILLION ABANDONED REGISTRATIONS

On Monday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) responded to accusations that it had excluded more than seven million Nigerians from participating in the Continuous Voter Registration by denying them the chance to complete their online pre-registration.

According to The PUNCH, INEC recently disclosed that only 3,444,378 Nigerians—or 32.8%—of the 10,487,972 people who pre-registered online for the election actually completed the process at a physical location.

The Commission was sued by 24 Nigerians, according to The PUNCH, for “failing to give them and other seven million Nigerians adequate time and opportunity to complete their voter registration after they have carried out their registration online.”

However, Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner in charge of voter education, claimed in a statement on Monday that Nigerians had been given sufficient time to finish their registrations and that the use of technologies was intended to speed up the registration process.

The Commissioner added that, for transparency, the Commission provided weekly statistical updates on the exercise.

“The Commission’s attention has been drawn to media reports that approximately seven million Nigerians who applied for online pre-registration as voters during the most recent nationwide Continuous Voter Registration were denied the opportunity to complete their registration and, as a result, the opportunity to collect their Permanent Voters Cards,” the statement read.

This assertion is false.

“To correct the record, Nigerians may remember that on June 28, 2021, the Commission implemented online voter pre-registration. As a result, citizens could start the registration process online and then schedule a time to complete the physical biometric capture at designated centres. Utilising technology to streamline the registration process was a creative idea. Additionally, walk-in centres allow Nigerians to start and finish their registration simultaneously without going through the online pre-registration process.
