Manchester United: Martinez out for the rest of the season

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has suffered a broken metatarsal that has brought his season to an end.

Martinez sustained the fractured metatarsal in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Thursday.

And in a further blow for United, the club also confirmed Martinez’s central-defensive partner Raphael Varane is expected to be out for a “few weeks” with a foot injury after being forced off at half-time in the same game.

A statement from United read: “Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.

“However, he is expected to make a full recovery in time to be ready for the start of next season.”

Ten Hag was somewhat cagey when asked about Martinez’s injury during his press conference on Friday.

It has not been confirmed whether the defender would undergo an operation or elect for a period of rest and rehabilitation to remedy the issue.

The news is a huge blow to United and means they will be without their first choice centre-backs at a crucial stage in the season.

Varane didn’t finish the game with Sevilla, and United confirmed he “is expected to be out for a few weeks.”

With United battling for glory in the Europa League, the FA Cup and pushing to secure a place in the top four in the Premier League, Ten Hag’s defensive resources will be tested.

Harry Maguire, may well get a run in the team that he has been craving.
