Nigeria pulls out D’Tigers from Afrobasket qualifiers

The Nigerian senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will not be participating in the FIBA Afrobasket Qualifiers set to commence in Tunisia this Friday.

The Nigeria Basketball Federation cited insufficient funds as the reason for the team’s absence, attributing it to the Ministry of Sports’ inability to provide necessary financial support for the qualifiers.

Both the male (D’Tigers) and female national basketball teams have faced challenges in their preparation for major continental and global tournaments due to recurring financial constraints.

Despite these obstacles, President of the NBBF, Engr. Musa Kida, has personally taken on the financial responsibility to ensure the participation of the national teams. However, despite his considerable investment, he has yet to be reimbursed, leaving the federation unable to secure further funds for the current national assignment.

The Ministry of Sports has also struggled to allocate funds for various national engagements, citing inadequate resources, including the upcoming All Africa Games scheduled for March in Accra, Ghana.

The NBBF appeals to the growing community of basketball fans in Nigeria and abroad to understand the challenging circumstances it faces due to the economic difficulties prevalent in the country.

Despite these challenges, the federation reassured of its commitment to the development and advancement of basketball in Nigeria.
