Okonjo-Iweala named amongst world’s 100 most powerful women in 2022

Forbes Magazine has named Nigeria’s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as one of the world’s 100 most powerful women in 2022.

The current Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) makes the Forbes list alongside compatriot, Mo Abudu.

Other great women who make the cut include European Central Bank President, Christine Lagarde and US vice president, Kamala Harris.

Although 68-year-old Ngozi is named 91st on the list, it shows that the international community recognises her efforts and contributions in promoting global trade.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, before her appointment by the World Trade Organisation, had served two times as Nigeria’s finance minister and was the Managing Director at the World Bank.

In a tweet, she revealed that this is the sixth time in her illustrious career that she has made the list of the most powerful women in the world.

The financial guru is married to a neurosurgeon, Dr Ikemba Iweala, and they have four children together.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian woman made history, becoming the first black woman to bag a PhD in pure mathematics from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Professor Oghenetega Ighedo had her first degree at Delta State University before she obtained a master’s degree in pure mathematics from Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan.

In the 149-year existence of the University of South Africa, no black woman had completed a PhD in pure mathematics until the Nigerian academician arrived.
