The General Secretary of the federation, Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi says only the NFF’s technical director can decide Salisu Yusuf’s fate.

Coach Salisu Yusuf on Tuesday night led the U23 Olympic team to a 2-0 defeat to Guinea in Morocco.

The defeat meant Nigeria will not take part in this year’s U23 AFCON to be held in Morocco, which is a qualifying tournament for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This is the second consecutive Olympics that Nigeria’s flag will not be at the men’s football event.

Speaking at the launch of Naija Super 8 football tournament in Lagos, yesterday, Sanusi said. “I always want to do my job and allow others to do their jobs too. By virtue of my appointment, I am an administrator. But I want to assure you that the NFF will soon put in place a new method of appointing coaches for the various national teams. I am sure Nigerians will be happy by the time the new method comes into operation.”

Asked if the NFF will still keep coach Yusuf after failing with both the CHAN Eagles and the Olympics Eagles, he said. “That question is for the Technical Director and members of the Technical Committee to answer. My duty is to do my job and allow others to do their job.

Continuing, Alhaji Sanusi who was in Morocco with the team said, “Nigeria is at a crossroads. Now you are asking us to intervene in what the coach is doing.

“Let me tell you that the technical director, whose duty it is to take charge of technical matters like recommending the appointment or removal of coaches is in the best position to decide on the question you are asking me about Salisu Yusuf.”
