Senator Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano Central) officially announced his switch to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday, one month after leaving the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Shekarau left the NNPP for the PDP on August 29, 2022, along with thousands of his supporters, claiming that the party, led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the party’s presidential candidate, had treated them unfairly. The Senate’s president, Ahmad Lawan, announced Shekarau’s defection by stating that the senator from Kano Central had written to his colleagues to that effect.

After the announcement, PDP senators led by the minority leader, Philip Aduda, and the minority whip, Chukwuka Utazi ( Enugu North), joyfully embraced Shekarau for defecting to their party.
