Single mum who graduated with first-class degree, back hawking on the street

A single mum who graduated with a first-class degree has returned to hawking on the street so she can fend for herself and two children.

The Ghanaian woman, identified as Priscilla Akwagu, earned a first-class Bachelor of Arts degree in Twi Education.

During an interview with Joy News, she revealed that although she graduated from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), hawking remains her only source of income.

The 32-year-old said the high unemployment rate in Ghana forced him to settle for hawking so she could pay off debts inherited from her mum.

“My mum used to sell the ‘bofrot’, and she had debts to settle. So, I thought it was wise to come and take over from her and clear the debts. The business was lucrative, and that helped me settle her debts,” she said.

Life As A Single Mom

Priscilla was pregnant with her first daughter, Saviour Maadewe, when she was only 17, but her determination saw her return to the classroom at age 21 to begin her secondary education.

Although she has a passion for teaching, having worked as a teaching assistant in the past, she lamented that people give bribes to be fixed to teaching opportunities.

“I love to teach. When I was returning from my national service, I told myself I’d go to any nearby school and teach for free. People are taking money before they get a place to be fixed in GES,” she said.

How High Costs Of Flour Affects Profit

She lamented the rising costs of flour, which eats into her profit margins and that she fries by the roadside without shelter, as she doesn’t have a permanent place.

Meanwhile, a pretty Nigerian lady came on social media to celebrate three years of selling akara.

The 300-level Nigerian student, identified as Amaka, shared her life story and inspired netizens.

In the short video shared by @datswasup, she said she combined schooling and her business and thanked God for seeing her through it.
