Tiger Woods withdraws from Masters

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from The Masters due to injury ahead of the resumption of the third round on Sunday.

The five-time champion was six over par after seven holes of his third round before heavy rain stopped play on Saturday.

Woods, who was making just his second start of the year, closed the second round with a 74 despite the cold and wet conditions, securing a record-equalling 23rd consecutive cut at The Masters on three-over.

However, he made a poor start to the third round, posting two bogeys and two double-bogeys in his first seven holes, and looked in physical pain.

He will not return for the extended Sunday session to finish the third round.

“I am disappointed to have to WD this morning due to reaggravating my plantar fasciitis,” Woods said on Twitter.

“Thank you to the fans and to The Masters who have shown me so much love and support. Good luck to the players today!”

With 11 holes left to finish, he would likely have been one of the first players out for the final round.

A brief statement from tournament officials on Sunday read: “Due to injury, Tiger Woods has officially withdrawn from the Masters after completing seven holes of his third round.”

American Brooks Koepka leads the field on 13 under six holes into his third round as he chases a first Green Jacket.

The four-time major winner is four clear of Spain’s Jon Rahm, with American amateur Sam Bennett three shots further back.

The final group must play 29 holes on Sunday if the tournament is to finish on time and avoid a first Monday finish since 1983.
