‘Japa’ Threatened As UK Govt Considers Tougher Visa Rules

The British government is reportedly considering stricter rules for the number of relatives immigrants can bring into the country.

The UK Homie office has revealed that Nigeria recorded a higher number of relatives than other groups of migrants.

UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman has stated that the government has considered tightening the rules on dependants.

She said the Home Office immigration statistics discovered a “surprising inconsistency” in the rate of working and studying immigrants.

The Home Office report showed that 40% of all dependants accompanying international students as of June 2022 are Nigerians.

Meanwhile, Nigerian students made up just 7% of all foreign students at the same time.

About 34,000 Nigerians who got UK study visas were accompanied by 31,898 dependants.

The ratio was similar for work visas as 8,972 Nigerians brought 8,576 dependants.

Other countries in the data include China which has 114,837 students with 401 dependants and 93,049 Indian students with 24,916 dependants.
