Weekend Review: Liverpool thrash Manchester United

Liverpool thrashed Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield on Sunday, to halt their 11-game unbeaten run.

This is the biggest win in the history of the fixture, passing Liverpool’s 7-1 victory in the 1895-96 Second Division.

Manchester United won their first trophy since 2017 with the Carabao Cup win and 7 days later are humiliated at Anfield.

Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah each scored two goals in an extraordinary performance by Jurgen Klopp’s side before Roberto Firmino added the seventh as United capitulated amid scenes of wild jubilation among the home support.

With Mohamed Salah’s brace, he became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Premier League.

His 129th goal for the club sees him leapfrog Robbie Fowler’s previous record of 128 goals.

Chelsea beat Leeds United 1-0 thanks to a Wesley Fofana header that put an end to their winless run.

After a run of just two wins in their past 15 games, there was a sense that three points were a must for Potter.

The Blues started the first half well, playing on the front foot and moving the ball with speed and purpose.

But Fofana ended Chelsea’s run of 396 minutes without a goal when he rose to head home from a corner early in the second half.

Chelsea remains 10th despite the win while Leeds is 17th and one point above the relegation zone.

Arsenal in dramatic win

Reiss Nelson scored a stunning 97th-minute winner as Arsenal came from two goals down to beat Bournemouth.

Bournemouth had taken the lead after just 9.11 seconds through Philip Billing, and went 2-0 up via a Marcos Senesi header.

However, Arsenal pulled level with goals by Thomas Partey and Ben White, before Nelson struck.

Arsenal’s Premier League lead is restored to five points after they had seemed certain to cede ground to Manchester City, winners over Newcastle in the early kick-off.

Other European Leagues

Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga with victory at Stuttgart.

Matthjis de Ligt opened the scoring with a low strike from distance in the 39th minute before Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting doubled the lead in the 62nd.

Choupo-Moting’s goal – set up by good work from Jamal Musiala and Thomas Muller – came the day after he signed a new one-year contract at Bayern.

Stuttgart pulled a goal back through Juan Jose Perea with two minutes to go.

The victory sends Bayern back to the top of the Bundesliga standings, ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference.

Dortmund had overtaken Bayern and gone three points clear at the summit with a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig on Friday.

Barcelona is nine points clear at the top of La Liga after beating struggling Valencia.

Raphinha put Xavi’s side into the lead with a header from Sergio Busquets’ dinked ball over the top.

They looked set to take control of the game when they won a penalty in the second half but Ferran Torres hit the post against his old team.

Ansu Fati struck the woodwork a minute later and Barcelona ended with 10 men after Ronald Araujo was sent off.

Real Madrid is now nine points behind La Liga leaders Barcelona after playing out a goalless draw at Real Betis.

Madrid had a goal ruled out by the video assistant referee because Karim Benzema’s free-kick hit team-mate Antonio Rudiger’s arm on the way in.

Mbappe now PSG’s leading scorer

Paris Saint-Germain beat Nantes 4-2 with both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe on target.

With the victory, PSG went 11 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table.

The hosts didn’t have to wait long, taking the lead after just 12 minutes. Nuno Mendes did well to dig out a cross on the left-hand side which bobbled up into the path of Lionel Messi who rifled it home – taking his scoring run to five consecutive Ligue 1 matches.

With 201 goals, Kylian Mbappe moves one clear of Edinson Cavani to become PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Moise Kean was sent off 40 seconds after coming off the bench as Juventus lost at Roma on Sunday.

Kean was sent on in the final minute before being shown a straight red card for kicking out at Mancini.

The Roma defender had earlier scored what proved to be the winner with a powerful low strike.

Roma moves back into fourth in Serie A with the win.

Juventus, meanwhile, drop one place to eighth as their seven-match unbeaten run in all competitions was brought to an end.
