ASUU Strike: 5 things students should be prepared for upon resumption

Great news for Nigerian students: ASUU has called off its eight-month strike, which began in February. While this should be a comfort for the millions of Nigerian students affected, many have resorted to social media to voice their outrage at the alarming announcement.

Many students were planning to either take their semester exams or something similar when the strike began. We all assumed the strike would last the normal two to four weeks. But as time went on, many Nigerian students moved on with their life.

Some developed skills to assist them advance in the workforce. For some, they have succeeded in finding decent jobs on their own. Others have began businesses to supplement their income.

So, now that the ASUU strike has ended, how can these students resume their studies after months of disruption?

In this article, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 things students should be prepared for now that ASUU has called off the strike.

This is only to get you started while you plan your return to school.

5 things students should be prepared for

1. Rush of the Academic Calendar

Be mentally prepared for the flurry of academic activity. Some students should be aware of this because, prior to the ASUU strike, some departments were already organising exams. So, what do you think will happen to the questions that have already been set?

Except for minor revisions to remind students of what has been taught, it is best to just prepare for exams.

2. Accommodation Difficulty

If you are a student who is considering paying rent, you must have twice as much money since it is now time for student landlords to reap the rewards of their investment.

Also, there will be overflow of students on campus, so it is advisable to arrive extremely early to ensure a good place because students have frequently complained throughout the years about how inadequate the hostels are.

3. Increased cost of living

Due to the country’s inflation, it is advised to return to school with enough money and, if possible, some extra cash to cover these costs. School life is unquestionably very expensive, from fees to textbook purchases to paying for practical lessons, to transportation and feeding.

4. No break

Eight months into the semester, it is clear that students have had enough time off, so don’t plan on any, since lecturers will likely want to speed up the academic calendar to fit with the four-year academic cycle’s timetable arrangement.

5. Time management

As I previously stated, the majority of students over the past few months have developed their skills, participated in entrepreneurship, or found rewarding employment.

As a result, now that the ASUU strike has been called off, you should sit down and think through how you can balance both aspects of your life.
