Alex Otti, a Labour Party (LP) candidate, won the governorship election in Abia State on March 18. He defeated other candidates from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Peoples Party (YPP).
According to Channels, Otti received 175,467 votes, Ahiwe from the PDP got 88,529 votes, and Nwafor from the YPP received 28,972 votes. The LP candidate also won 10 out of the 17 local government areas in the state.
It is Otti’s third attempt at winning a gubernatorial election, having run for the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015 and 2019.
This victory is also significant for the LP, as it is the first time the party has produced a governor in the last 20 years since Olusegun Mimiko was elected Ondo State governor in 2009.
