Young Nigerian man acquires PhD degree at 21 years

An extraordinary Nigerian man identified as Akinyele Aminu has set an excellent record as one of the youngest individuals to acquire a PhD.

The young man, who is just 21 years old, got his PhD in the United States from the University of Pittsburgh.

According to Akinyele, he got into Mountain Top University at 14, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature.

“I went through all the classes until I got to primary school, where I was given double promotion from primary two to primary four. I had a complete secondary education and gained admission to the university at 14; the same year I left secondary school,” he told Punch.

Akinyele was awarded a fellowship that caters for my entire tuition

At 18, Akinyele got his Bachelor’s degree and decided to earn a Master’s degree. The young man continued and obtained his Master’s degree in Linguistics from Covenant University here in Nigeria and proceeded to the United States to earn his PhD degree in linguistics.

The 21-year-old couldn’t hide his happiness as he excitedly took to LinkedIn to share his joy while announcing that he was awarded a fellowship that caters for his entire tuition and expenses.

“I am elated to announce that I have proceeded for a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh at the age of 21! In recognition of my academic accomplishments, I was awarded a fellowship that caters for my entire tuition as well as all my expenses,” he wrote on LinkedIn.

Meanwhile, a Nigerian woman has made history, becoming the first black woman to bag a PhD in pure mathematics from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Professor Oghenetega Ighedo had her first degree at Delta State University before she obtained a master’s degree in pure mathematics from Nigeria’s premier university, the University of Ibadan.

In the 149-year existence of the University of South Africa, no black woman had completed a PhD in pure mathematics until the Nigerian academician arrived.
