World Cup: Mbappe’s brace sends France to the QFs

Kylian Mbappe’s brace for defending champions, send them to the quarter-finals of the FIFA 2022 World Cup.

France beat Poland 3-1 at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha to advance to the quarter-finals. Two goals from Mbappe and one from Giroud dumped Poland out of the World Cup.

Olivier Giroud scored just before halftime in the 44th minute to send France leading going into the break 1-0. Kylian Mbappe gave the assist.

Giroud becomes France’s all-time leading goal scorer ahead of Thiery Henry. The goal was his 52nd for France to surpass Henry’s record.

Mbappe turned the game on its head in the second half, scoring two wonderful goals.

He scored his first in the 74th minute with a powerful strike that hit the roof of the net from a Dembele assist.

The second in add-on time was another beauty as he curled in a shot inside the box.

Mbappe’s brace his 5th now makes him the highest goal scorer in the World Cup.

Poland was awarded a late penalty via VAR but Robert Lewandowski missed it. However, he got a second go, which he slotted past Hugo Lloris for a late consolation.

Robert Lewandowski scored a 99th-minute when Poland was awarded a penalty by the Var for a handball.

The penalty was re-taken before Lewandowski could score as Hugo Lloris had saved the first kick, but was not on his line.

The consolation goal only denied Hugo Lloris a clean sheet on his record-equaling 142nd appearance for France.

France will await the winner of the England and Senegal tie who play later on Sunday.
