Nick Kyrgios contemplates retirement amidst injury struggles

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has openly expressed his disinterest in playing tennis anymore due to ongoing struggles with injuries.

Despite this sentiment, the Australian athlete has conveyed his commitment to continuing for the foreseeable future, driven by his desire to provide for his family.

Once considered among the best players in the tennis circuit, Kyrgios showcased his exceptional skills, reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022 with outstanding performances.

His on-court unpredictability, marked by unexpected shots and bold choices, has captivated both opponents and spectators.

However, Nick Kyrgios has not been immune to controversy, occasionally displaying a combative attitude. In recent years, he has revealed challenges with motivation, mental health issues, and episodes of self-harm.

As the upcoming Australian Open approaches, Kyrgios has withdrawn from the 2024’s first Grand Slam event to address fitness concerns and cope with existing injuries. Having played only one match in 2023, he attributes his physical exhaustion to knee surgery, along with persistent foot and wrist problems.

In a candid interview on the On Purpose podcast with Jay Shetty, the 28-year-old admitted, “If it was up to me, I don’t really want to play any more, to be honest. But I have to, almost. I have so much more to give.”

Despite his lack of passion for the sport, Nick Kyrgios is driven by his love for taking care of his family and loved ones.

Expressing fatigue from three surgeries at a relatively young age, Kyrgios disclosed, “I only want to play for about another one to two years, be at the top, and go down on my own terms.”

Concerned about potential future surgeries, he emphasized his desire to have a fulfilling final phase in his tennis career.

Reflecting on a challenging period four years ago, when he sought psychiatric care following a 2019 Wimbledon defeat to Rafael Nadal, Nick Kyrgios revealed that the experience had accelerated his exhaustion and brought him close to the end of his career.

He acknowledged the toll that scrutiny and pressure had taken on him and expressed, “I am tired. I’m tired of playing tennis.”

Despite the challenges, Nick Kyrgios aims to find peace with his achievements and hopes others will accept his decision to step away from the sport in the near future.
