Oliseh Hopes To Coach Nigeria A Second Time

Former Nigerian international midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, says if given a second opportunity to coach the Super Eagles he will deliver.

Former Nigerian international midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, says if given a second opportunity to coach the Super Eagles he will deliver.

Oliseh says that under the appropriate circumstances, he might still be able to lead the team in the future.

Between 2015 and 2016, Oliseh’s eight-month tenure as Super Eagles manager came to a contentious conclusion.

The midfielder, who is a 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion gave several reasons for leaving his position, including contract violations, a lack of support, unpaid salaries, and benefits for his players.

“My priority is to get Nigeria back to the top,” Oliseh said during an interview with Channels TV.

”I will do it (handle the Super Eagles) if the person employing me have the interest of Nigeria at heart.’”

Oliseh who had a bad working relationship with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) during his tenure as coach.

Many accused him of abandoning the nation during a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series because he knew the terrain was difficult.

After he left, Samson Siasia was brought in to rescue an already sinking ship but was not able to salvage the situation.

Oliseh had a very rocky relationship with squad members during his reign too.

The likes of Vincent Enyeama and Emmanuel Emenike retired prematurely from international football.

Sunday Oliseh in his playing days marking out Argentina Captain Diego Maradona on 25th June 1994 during that year’s FIFA World Cup at the Fox Borough In Boston.


He also made a relatively young and inexperienced Ahmed Musa the squad captain. And that decision was at the expense of John Obi Mikel. A perceived costly mistake that was later remedied by Coach Siasia.

Only recently, FIFA selected Oliseh as one its Technical Study Group members for the Qatar 2022 World Cup finals.

As a Player, Oliseh had an interesting career at club level, beginning with Julius Berger in 1990 in Lagos.

He later moved overseas, joining Liege in Belgium.

He also played for famous European clubs such as Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and others.

Internationally, he played 54 times for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
