Nollywood legend Pete Edochie has addressed the ongoing debate surrounding the handshake he exchanged with Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife.
In a video that has since gone viral, Edochie and Kanayo O Kanayo can be seen arriving at Elizabeth Jack Rich’s 40th birthday celebration and approaching the Yoruba king’s table to greet him.

The actors extended the customary Igbo backhand handshakes to the esteemed monarch, which the Ooni graciously accepted with a smile.
However, some online users expressed their belief that Edochie and Kanayo should have shown deference to the Ooni by bowing to him, as is the Yoruba tradition for a first-class monarch.

Pete Edochie faced criticism on Twitter from an individual who considered his actions disrespectful to the queen and called him out on his behaviour.
In Edochie’s defence, entrepreneur Sommy Keshi questioned why a titled Chief like Pete Edochie should be expected to bow to the Ooni, emphasizing his Igbo heritage.
