POS man mistakenly receives N280 Million, lavishes money on houses and cars, goes for Hajj

Alfa Rafiu, a Nigerian man, was detained after it was discovered that he had been spending the funds that had been deposited to his POS account by mistake.

According to Tribune, a total of N280 million was inadvertently wired to his account in multiple payments.

Alfa Rafiu, an inhabitant of the Akuji compound in the Ilorin West Local Government Area’s Abayowa Area, started using the money without informing the police.

A witness who was close to the victim gave a first account of the incident: “Instead of him to have drawn the attention of the bank that mistakenly transferred the huge fund to his account, he went on a speeding spree. Rafiu bought houses and cars and sponsored people to the lesser Hajj. Although he was generous to several people in the community, some residents were surprised about his sudden wealth as a POS operator.”

The police public relations officer, Ajayi Okansanmi (SP), confirmed the arrest and stated that the matter had been transferred to Lagos.

He said: “We can confirm the incident but it is the Lagos Unit that are currently investigating the matter as it has been transferred to them.”

His arrest, according to the Police PRO, was carried out by the Ikoyi, Lagos-based Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID).

Protest erupts in Warri, angry residents destroy POS stand

Meanwhile, residents have angrily dismantled a POS operator’s kiosk in Warri, Delta state in order to portray their frustration over the exorbitant charges.

It is no longer news that POS operators have taken advantage of the Naira scarcity to charge Nigerians outrageous fees to withdraw money.

Since the beginning of the new Naira note crisis, withdrawal fees have skyrocketed. POS operators, who previously charged N100 for every N5,000, now demand as much as N1500 for every N5000 withdrawn.
