Premier League: Teams suffer injuries before the restart

The Premier League like all other major leagues of the world is on break, but teams have suffered injuries before the restart.

With teams playing friendlies and involved in mid-season tournaments, injury to players in training camps has become inevitable.

The Premier League returns on the 26th of December and here is a look at some players that won’t be part of the restart.

Liverpool

Luis Diaz suffered an injury during Liverpool’s warm-weather training camp in the UAE.

Diaz has been out for Liverpool since October when he suffered a knee injury. He was using the warm weather camp in preparation for his return.

Jurgen Klopp described it as a “proper smash in the face”.

However, the winger sustained a setback last week. Jurgen Klopp said: “He was not in the best possible place.

“It’s clear it’s a big disappointment for all of us, for him as well.

“Then the news came and it was a proper smash in the face. But that’s it now.”

Diaz has scored four goals and assisted three in the 12 matches he played before getting injured.

Diogo Jota is currently out with a calf injury. Liverpool have Salah, Nunez and Firmino as fit senior forwards.

Chelsea

Chelsea suffered another injury blow when Armando Broja was stretchered off in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Aston Villa in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

Armando Broja could be out for the rest of the season after rupturing the ACL in his right knee.

He would require surgery and faces a lengthy period of rehabilitation on the joint.

After he was stretchered off, head coach Graham Potter said: “It doesn’t look positive at the moment, but it is too early to say.

“Fingers crossed, but it is an awkward one.”

Broja, who has made 12 competitive appearances this season for Chelsea.

It is another injury blow for Chelsea, who had a raft of players out before the World Cup.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, N’Golo Kante, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have all been stepping up their returns while at the team’s training camp in Dubai this month, although some are closer than others to a return.

Tottenham

Tottenham forward Richarlison has suffered a hamstring injury and is set to be out for a while.

He got injured in Brazil’s quarter-final defeat by Croatia in the World Cup.

Richarlison missed six games for Tottenham before the World Cup because of a calf injury.

Spurs expect the Richarlison to be out for weeks rather than months but they are still awaiting results of a scan.

It is the latest in a line of injuries this season for Antonio Conte. The Spurs manager has already suffered injuries to Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, and Son Heung-min across the season.

Arsenal

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus has undergone successful surgery on his injured right knee.

Jesus got injured in Brazil’s last group game against Cameroon in the World Cup on Friday. The striker came off for Brazil during the 1-0 defeat in the 64th minute. He has been ruled out of the remainder of Brazil’s campaign in the World Cup in Qatar.

Arsenal said the 25-year-old has had an operation and is starting his rehabilitation. They did not give a timescale for recovery. Reports have suggested Jesus could be out for up to three months.

An Arsenal statement read: “Gabby will now begin his rehabilitation programme. Everyone at the club is supporting Gabby and will be working hard to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”

Arsenal is currently top of the Premier League table five points ahead of their nearest challengers Manchester City.
