A resilient single mum triumphed as she built her dream house, after she was evicted by her landlord.

After years of procrastination, Susan Warui took on an ambitious project to construct her dream house in Matasia, Ngong.

The turning point came when she experienced her lowest moment on December 24th, facing eviction from her previous residence due to rent arrears. The eviction weighed heavily on her, especially as she felt responsible for her two young sons, aged 10 and seven.

Rather than succumbing to defeat, Susan channeled the eviction’s impact into motivation, vowing to create a permanent home where eviction would never be a concern.

Though the journey proved challenging, she persisted, drawing inspiration from her sons’ encouragement and unwavering support from understanding friends, her nuclear family, and the builders themselves. The builders offered timelines and uplifting words, even proposing to work on credit as long as she could contribute funds for materials.

Susan also found reliable suppliers, facilitating transactions through phone communication despite not meeting them in person.

Beginning the project and finding the right guidance and collaborators proved the most daunting aspect, especially as the male-dominated industry often underestimated the abilities of women.

In April, Susan moved into the partially completed house, embracing the joy of living in her own space, though some essentials like curtains were still missing.

This allowed her to identify any mistakes made during the process and spurred her hope of expanding her territory by convincing her neighbor, who has yet to build, to sell the adjacent plot to her.
