Alex Ekubo Okwaraeke, better known professionally as Alexx Ekubo, was born on April 10th 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He has three siblings – two sisters and one brother. His parents – Jane Ekubo-Okwaraeke and Mazi Ekubo-Okwaraeke – would have named him Michael if they had been exposed to American pop culture and media.

Alexx Ekubo grew up in a very strong and vibrant Christian home, “the type where you join the choir as a kid and if you do something wrong, my Mum would say ‘I would report you to God’”. Who else would an evangelist report an erring child to?
What did Alexx Ekubo study?
We don’t know when and where he had his first contact with formal and western education, but his secondary school was at Federal Government College Daura in Kaduna State, 769.1km away from Arochukwu, his hometown in Abia State.
He was a studious student but love, well, infatuation, found him crushing on a classmate in his final year of school.
“She was the most beautiful girl I had seen, and she was really, really quiet, which intrigued me. While the other girls were loud and everywhere, she was a very quiet girl,” he said.
“We hit it off much later, and I regret it was so late because it was when I was writing my final exams, and we had only a few months together. After we graduated, we lost touch, and I haven’t seen her since then.”
After obtaining his secondary school leaving certificate and his first kiss, Alexx Ekubo proceeded to the University of Calabar, Cross River State. There, he got a Bachelor’s Degree in Law.
“My Law degree is in my freezer, chilling,” he said.
“As the saying goes, ‘strike the iron when it is hot’, now that my market is selling in Nollywood and entertainment, let me be striking this iron now.”
Before striking the iron, though, he bagged a diploma in Mass Communication from the less prestigious Calabar Polytechnic in the same city he got his law degree. And you know where that credential is, too, right?

Alexx Ekubo’s Career
Acting has always been what he had a passion for. When he was young, he came in contact with producers and directors who were fond of using his parents’ house to shoot movies. As a show of gratitude, they made him appear in minor roles, like running errands.
The most ridiculous was being asked to cry in some scenes. While in the university, though, he played more dignifying roles, like a TV show presenter and lead actor, as he was a member of a dance and drama group.
He rode on the back of the Bruce family and Silverbird Entertainment to Nollywood fame after he emerged as the first runner-up in the Mr Nigeria competition in 2010. Five years earlier, he had his film debut in a near-waka pass role in Lancelot Imasuen’s Sinners in the House.
His first major role was in Ladies Men after his unforgettable exploits at the Mr Nigeria contest. But before then, he was in some TV productions like Secrets & Scandals, Hope Bay, and Happy Family.
Alexx Ekubo soon became the darling of the movie buff in Nigeria, and recognition duly followed. He won the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2013 Best of Nollywood Awards for his masterful interpretation of his role in the Weekend Getaway.
His talent and natural charm have won over my heart, and at a relatively young age, it’s quite impressive how he has already acted in so many A-rated movies. This exposure has now seen him dabble in other areas, like producing and directing movies. Modelling is another area he excels.
It’s more like a nature-endowed choice as his good looks and mannequin-like body makes many designers scrabble to put their clothes on him.
“I am a factory fitted like this. I do nothing extraordinary. I’m not a gym rat. I just eat right and drink lots of water,” he said.
His biggest fashion show since he started modelling in 2010 was the Arise Magazine Fashion Week in 2011 and the next edition the following year. Both events had over 150 foreign designers and about 300 models showcasing their stuff on stage.
“Being a model has hugely influenced my style. I have been exposed to a lot of designers, creativity and style in the fashion world. It’s a really colourful and talent-filled world, and I’m overjoyed to be a part of it,” he said.
“Whenever I’m on a runway, I feel like I’m the king of the world. I take that moment and own it. You just have to stop whatever you’re doing and watch me walk.”
But acting is what he does best.
“I come alive in front of the camera; it’s like we are in a romantic relationship; I love the camera, and the camera loves me right back,” he said.
“I love acting as much as I love being on the runway, but acting is more of a job because it’s time-consuming and might take up to three to six weeks to make one wonderful movie, whereas I take less than 60 seconds to walk up and down that runway.”
However, both have exposed him to the vast world of fashion and style, which has helped him create his personal style.
