FIBA RANKING: Nigeria Drops Points In Latest World Rating


Nigeria’s absence at the FIBA Basketball World Cup has further exacerbated the country’s woes in the slam and dunk game rankings.

One of the reasons for the decline was massive misunderstandings amongst stakeholders.

A situation which led to government coming in to intervene by withdrawing the country from international games.

But, because stakeholders decided to sit down and resolved, it is hoped things will improve.

The Ministry of Sports in Nigeria have finally recognised Musa Kida as the President of Nigeria’s Federation. Because of this new development, it is believed there will be improvement but some followers are skeptical and have been apprehensive

The country’s national basketball team D’Tigress who were number 12th in the world have now dropped three places to 15th.

FIBA had released the ranking earlier today and all the national women’s teams across the globe can evaluate their growth.


Meanwhile, Mali, who took over Nigeria’s Fiba World Cup slot have moved up nine places to 26th. They achieved this because they returned to global showcase and finished 11th after having placed 15th in 2010.


China jumped to second place in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike. Thanks to them finishing second in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.


They lost 83-61 by the world’s top ranked team USA at the FIBA World cup, and USA top the ranking with 848.8 points.


By reaching the podium for the first time since 1994, losing only to the World Champion USA, China jumped five spots to second with 676.5 points.


Hosts, Australia finished third at home in Sydney in the flagship event of women’s basketball. And they retained the third place spot in the ranking with 668.3 points.


Fourth place in the latest ranking now belongs to Spain. They fell two spots to 661 points as they failed to qualify for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup. The Spaniards had taken second in 2014 and third in 2010 and 2018.


Canada finish off the top five in fifth. They finished with a one-spot drop to 648.9 points.


The biggest climber in the Top 10 was Puerto Rico. The rose six spots to 10th because they reached the FIBA Women’s World Cup Quarter-Finals. This was arguably the biggest positive surprise of the event. And in 2018, they finished 16th at the World Cup held in Spain.


Bosnia and Herzegovina registered the largest rise in the top 50. As they jumped 10 spots to 14th place as they reached their first Women’s Basketball World Cup and took 12th.
