Match Report: Arsenal held by Brentford, Iheanancho downs Tottenham, other results

It was another exciting weekend of football in the English Premier League (EPL) as Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by stubborn Brentford courtesy of a goal by Ivan Toney.

The Gunners’ title challenge suffered a setback, and they lost the chance to go eight points clear of their closest rival, Manchester City. New signing Leandro Trossard came off the bench to put Arsenal in front, but Ivan Toney had other plans.

Big-spending Chelsea continued to struggle as they were denied victory by West Ham. An Emerson strike cancelled out Joao Felix’s opener for Chelsea. However, the blues were left fuming after VAR couldn’t spot a Tomas Soucek handball in the penalty box.

David De Gea marked his 400th appearance with a clean sheet as Manchester United maintained their imperious form under Erik ten Hag as they breezed past Leeds United by 2-0.

However, they left it late, as it took a Marcus Rashford goal in the 80th minute to get the ball rolling before Alejandro Garnacho added a second five minutes from time.

Manchester City courtsey of three first-half goals from Rodri, Gundogan and a penalty coolly converted by the in-form Riyad Mahrez helped the Citizens to see off Aston Villa at the Etihad stadium.

Tottenham Hotspurs, buoyed by the return of Antonio Conte to the touchline, took the lead after Rodrigo Bentacur tucked in from close range.

However, Leicester City ended up snatching all three points after Mendy brought them level with a glorious belter; Maddison, Iheanacho, and Harvey Barnes completed the rout to clinch a 4-1 victory.

Southampton’s coach Nathan Jones was sacked after his side lost 1-2 on home turf to ten-man Wolves. Crystal Palace and Brighton played out to a 1-1; Solly March gave Brighton the lead, but a goalkeeping howler from Robert Sanchez allowed James Tomkins to head in the equalizer.

Fulham defeated Nottingham forest by 2-0; Bournemouth and Newcastle United settled for a 1-1 draw.

In the French league, Paris Saint-German (PSG), without the injured Lionel Messi, fell to a shocking 3-i defeat away to Monaco. In the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich won 3-0, while Borussia Dortmund won Werder Bremen by 2-0.

Barcelona outlined their dominance in La Liga as they defeated Villarreal 1-0 courtsey of a first-half strike by Pedri, to win their sixth game on the bounce, establishing an 11 points lead over their closest rival.

A Karim Benzema strike in between two goals apiece from Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde saw Real Madrid cruise to a 5-3 victory in the club world cup.
