About the Tetfund Scholarship

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) was formally established as an Education Trust Fund (ETF) by the 1993 act number 7 which was later amended by the 1998 act number 40.

It is now replaced with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund act 2011. It was a decision to set up an agency to provide supplementary support to every level of public tertiary institution.

Their main objective was to use funding along with project management, for the rehabilitation, consolidation, and restoration of tertiary education in Nigeria.

Their main source of funds is the two percent education tax, paid from the assessable of companies registered in Nigeria. The federal inland revenue service (FIRS), helps collects the tax.

There are some guidelines that all the beneficiary institutions should follow as well as prospective TETFund scholars. Here are the guidelines:

  • Beneficiary institutions should only recommend scholars for sponsorship, to study for a masters degree (PhD, DSC, etc) at home or abroad.
  • The beneficiary institutions should on no account, make recommendations for online or part-time masters and PhD degree programmes.

Eligibility for the TETFund Scholarship

To be eligible for the TETFund scholarship, a nominee must:

  • The nominee must be a full-time Nigerian Academic Staff, working and nominated by a beneficiary institution.
  • You must have secured admission to pursue a full-time programme of study as specified in ‘A’ above in any university that satisfies the guidelines in ‘B’.
  • Candidates must be applying to study for a second master’s degree or a second doctorate degree

The Process for TETFund Scholarship

  1. All submissions from the institution that benefitted in respect of recommendation for the utilization of the ASTD intervention must be accompanied by the minutes of the meeting of the relevant selection committee.
  2. Applications for the scholarship will be processed for payment by the fund at two separate times of the year. This means that it will be if you want to start your study programme in September, and October if you want to start your programme in January of the new year.
  3. All submissions must come with supporting documents like an admission letter, filled TETFund Nomination form, Resume of the applicant, schedule of fees from the university, Bond form, Medical certificate, and Bank details;
  4. Scholars that are looking to apply, should obtain a tuition fee invoice from the training institution they intend to attend. It will state the total amount payable as tuition fee for the entire period of your study. You then forward this to TETFund with your:

Admission Letter for the TETFund Scholarship

The invoice should contain the total amount payable for the entire period, and not just for one year only. This invoice should also bear the full name of the potential scholar, and the bank account details of the schools that will receive payment.

The Details Should Include:

The total amount payable for the period of the course. The invoice must show the Account number, bank name, bank address, ABA routing number (for USA institutions), sort codes, SWIFT/BIC code, IBAN (for Europe and UK schools), transit code for Canadian institutions, and IFSC number for Indian schools.

In Addition to the Hard Copy

Submissions of these documents must also come with a soft copy on a memory stick and not a CD- ROM. It should be in MS- Excel in line with the accepted guides. Meanwhile, candidates can send other soft copies to es@tetfund.gov.ng and astandddept@tetfund.gov.ng.

Approval for TETFund Scholarship

As a Candidate, you must obtain and seek support from the fund before you begin a program. The scholarship scheme will not accept refund requests on the beneficiary’s previous spending by the support fund.

Sponsorships for TETFund Scholarship

All the candidates that turn out successful will get a scholarship award letter from their school. All of their benefits, fees, and other conditions will be spelt out in it.

Choice of universities under the ASTD

Candidates looking for sponsorship for the Tetfund scholarship to study back home in Nigeria should note the following:

  • Only universities that are under the NUC-approved graduate courses, would be accepted in Nigeria.
  • Any scholar that wants to study at the university they also work, it will not be sponsored.
  • Applicants looking to study abroad through sponsorship should note that:
  • The public funds will only be used to train Nigerian scholars in universities around the world
  • Scholars should look for admissions in countries that have universities ahead of the best university in Nigeria at any point in time.
  • Scholars should be guided by the university tables in those countries, to ensure that they are seeking placements in the top of league universities.

Note:

Change of course of study or school is not acceptable once a candidate wins the scholarship. Any scholar that changes their course of study or school, will refund the scholarship. They will get barred from using the fund’s support.
