“Her father left us even before we reached the hospital for her birth,” she recollected.
After some time, Thomas entered into a marriage with another man, an endeavor that proved unsuccessful due to her husband’s struggles with addiction.
Thomas recounted,
“He seized everything, every hard-earned dollar I had saved, I lost my apartment, and for a stretch, my daughter and I found rest in my Toyota Camry. One day, my daughter inquired, ‘Mommy, are we affluent or wanting?'”
After dedicating three decades to her role as a domestic worker, Thomas was granted the opportunity to pursue her dream to the fullest, thanks to sponsorship from her daughter.
During the autumn of 2018, she took a significant step forward by enrolling in a GED program at the SUNY Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center (BEOC) in the United States, with the ultimate aim of realizing her ambition of attending college.
Subsequently, Thomas became a student at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in New York City, where she stood out as one of the oldest members of her class.
Enduring an array of challenges, Thomas tenaciously pursued her aspiration of obtaining a degree. She persevered while working as a domestic worker in New York City.-
