Charly Boy Threatens Legal Action Against Premier Records Over Breach of 35-Year-Old Contracts

• Charly Boy has issued a legal threat against Premier Records Limited, accusing the record company of breaching contracts signed over 35 years ago.
  
• In a letter from Charly Boy’s lawyer, it was stated that the artist had signed Artists’ Recording Contracts with the company in 1988, 1990, and more recently.
  
• He alleged that the contracts had expired, yet Premier Records continued to violate his copyrights to the music.

Veteran entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has threatened to sue Premier Records Limited over alleged violation of terms of an agreement in musical contracts signed about 35 years ago.

He made this known in a letter written to the record label by his lawyer, Mr Rockson Igelige, which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

The letter, dated June 19, 2023, demanded that the record company return Charly Boy’s master tapes, artworks, promo collateral, and other confidential information within 30 days.

The lawyer also demanded payment of the artist’s outstanding royalties.

The affected albums included those recorded in 1990, featuring songs such as “Big Bottom,” “Aids,” “s3xy Lady,” “Mama,” and “Nwata Miss.” Additionally, albums titled “U-Turn” and “Reality” were listed, containing various songs.

According to Igelige, the contracts with Polydor Record (1988), Polygram Records Limited (1990), and currently Premier Records Limited had expired.

Therefore, the lawyer notified the company to cease breaching Charly Boy’s copyrights to the musical works produced during the period covered by the contracts.

The letter concluded by warning that any further breach would result in legal action. Charly Boy’s legal team hoped that the company would comply with their demands.
