Ham and Cheese Eggy Bread Recipe

Butter one side of each slice of bread. Then, prepare 4 ham and cheese sandwiches as you typically would.

Crack open the eggs, add the salt and ground black pepper, and beat the eggs thoroughly.

Take two of the sandwiches you made and dip them in the eggs. Make sure to give them a chance to soak in.

Take 1 ½ tablespoon of the oil and heat it in the frying pan, then place the two egg-soaked sandwiches.

Let them cook for 3–4 minutes until the side in contact with the oil becomes golden brown.

Flip over each sandwich and repeat step 5 for the other side.

Take the sandwiches out of the frying pan and onto a plate. Cover them to keep them warm.

Repeat steps 3 through 7 for the other two sandwiches.

Serve with mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, or any dressing of your liking.

Tips and Tricks for Making Eggy Bread

  1. Choose the right bread: Opt for bread slices that are slightly stale or a day old. Fresh bread can become too soft and may not hold up well during the soaking and cooking process. Thick slices of bread, such as brioche or challah, work best for eggy bread.

2. Soak the bread adequately: Ensure that both sides of the bread are fully coated with the egg mixture. Allow the bread to soak for a few seconds on each side, ensuring it absorbs enough of the mixture without becoming too soggy.

3. Use the right ratio of eggs to milk: A good rule of thumb is to use one egg for every ¼ to ½ cup of milk, depending on your preferred consistency. Adjust the ratio to achieve the desired richness and thickness of the eggy bread coating.

4. Add flavour to the egg mixture: Whisk in some vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, or a pinch of salt to the egg mixture for added flavour. These ingredients can elevate the taste of your eggy bread and give it a delightful aroma.

5. Use butter or oil for cooking: Coat the cooking surface with butter or oil to prevent the eggy bread from sticking and enhance the flavour. You can use butter, vegetable oil, or cooking spray, depending on your preference.

6. Cook on medium heat: Avoid cooking the eggy bread on high heat as it can result in uneven browning or burning. Medium heat allows the bread to cook evenly and gives it a golden-brown crust.

7. Flip carefully: When it’s time to flip the eggy bread, use a spatula or tongs to do so gently. Avoid pressing down on the bread as it cooks, as this can cause it to lose its fluffiness.

8. Keep warm in the oven: If you’re cooking multiple slices of eggy bread and want to keep them warm, place them on a baking sheet in a preheated oven set to low heat (around 200°F/93°C) while you finish cooking the rest. This helps maintain their warmth and crispness.

Eggy Bread vs French Toast

Name

The term “eggy bread” is commonly used in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world, while “French toast” is more prevalent in North America.

Bread

The choice of bread can differ. Eggy bread is often made with white bread, while French toast can be made with various types of bread, such as brioche, challah, or French baguette. The choice of bread can affect the texture and flavour of the final dish.

Soaking Time

French toast typically requires a longer soaking time to allow the bread to absorb the egg mixture fully. This results in a custard-like interior and a softer texture. On the other hand, Eggy bread may have slightly less soaking time, resulting in a firmer texture.

Seasonings

French toast often incorporates additional flavourings such as vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, or other spices into the egg mixture. These spices add a warm and aromatic touch to the dish. Eggy bread can be made plain or may have simpler flavourings.

Toppings

Both eggy bread and French toast can be served with various toppings such as syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruits, whipped cream, or savoury options like bacon or cheese. The choice of toppings is often a matter of personal preference.
