Charlyne Smith becomes first black person to earn PhD in Nuclear Engineering

  • An American Lady emerged as the first-ever black person to earn a PhD in Nuclear Engineering from the institution.
  • She developed much interest in Nuclear Engineering after speaking with nuclear scientist Dr Nickie Peters at a Coppin State University (CSU) alumni event.
  • She disclosed that having this record would mean more open doors and opportunities for people, especially the black community.

An American lady identified as Charlyne Smith emerged as the first black person to earn a PhD in Nuclear Engineering.

The 27 year old academic guru was originally from St. Catherine, Jamaica, North America until she moved to the United States in 2012 to pursue a career in science and technology.

She studied at the Coppin State University in Baltimore where she graduated from the institution in 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Mathematics.

According to the academic guru, she had developed interest in Nuclear Engineering after speaking with nuclear scientist Dr Nickie Peters at a Coppin State University (CSU) alumni event. 

Thereafter, she left to study in the University of Florida where she emerged the first black woman to earn a PhD from the university.

She opined that having this record would mean more open doors and opportunities for people, especially the black community.

In her words;

“It means more options, more open doors for marginalized groups, including Black women and men, to create and innovate in the nuclear energy space to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, including climate change.”

Charlyne is currently a Senior Nuclear Energy Analyst on the Nuclear Energy Innovation team at the Breakthrough Institute, aiding to facilitate major changes in the nuclear energy sector to many countries globally.

Meet Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman to fly to space

In other news, Mae Carol Jemison, an African American woman has set her name in history by being the first black woman to fly to space.

The multi-talented black woman hails from Alabama, United States, and attained the milestone in 1992. This was after she completed a mission with America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Now, Mae Carol Jemison is 66 years old and is a big inspiration for thousands of young scholars across the globe.
