Meet Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman to fly to space

Mae Carol Jemison, an African American woman has set her name in history by being the first black woman to fly to space.

The multi-talented black woman hails from Alabama, United States, and attained the milestone in 1992. This was after she completed a mission with America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Now, Mae Carol Jemison is 66 years old and is a big inspiration for thousands of young scholars across the globe.

When she was young, she took interest in science and arts 

At age 16, she gained admission  to Stanford University in California, United States to achieve a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Intriguingly, she graduated from the institution with two Bachelor’s degrees. One in Chemical Engineering and the other in Arts in African American Studies.

Shortly after these achievements at Stanford University, Mae Carol Jemison was admitted to become a Medical Doctor at Cornell University in New York, United States.

Adding to her streak of academic milestones, which included being a Chemical Engineer,Mae Carol Jemison later became a Medical Doctor in 1981. She joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and served as an astronaut in the Space centre. 

Jemison was a part of the first group of astronauts chosen. She flew on Sept. 12, 1992 and made  127 orbits of the Earth. Before setting her name in history, only three Black Americans, all men, had flown in space.

In her own words, at the time, “I’m not the first woman of colour, the first African American woman, who had the skills, the talent, the desire to be an astronaut. I know that I happen to be the first one that NASA selected, right now the only one.

9-year-old black boy becomes second youngest High School graduate in history

In another story, a 9-year-old Nigerian boy has emerged as one of the youngest High School graduates in history.

The boy, named David Balogun lives in Pennsylvania. He is someone who has a passion for science and computer programming.

David was described by his teacher as an inspirational kid who changes the way teachers think about teaching.
