Peter Obi and his massive ‘Obidient’ movement

The 2023 election appears to have adopted the method for its supporters, similar to how artists have fan names.

For the Labour Party, it is the term “Obidients,” derived from the name of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

It has quickly grown to become a household name for every Nigerian in Nigeria and the diaspora.

No matter how uninterested in politics or how inactive you are, you must be familiar with the name or phrase.

More specifically, it seems as though every young person in Nigeria is now Obidient and proudly supports the movement.

The phrase has become so well-known that it is now listed in the Urban Dictionary. Not only that, but it is also a monumental challenge to correctly spell the word “Obedient” these days.

Peter Obi and his Obidient movement began on Twitter, where the majority of opponents mocked the party’s strategy. However, more recently, Obidient movement rallies have been packed with supporters even without Peter Obi physically present.

No political party or movement in that country has ever amassed the same level of popularity and support as the Obidient movement since independence.

The movement seems to have given Nigerian youths who have long been inactively involved in Nigerian politics a voice. Some have even expressed interest in running for office with the Labour Party platform.

The Obidient Movement Captain: Peter Obi’s Biography

Gregory Peter, Obi was born in Onitsha, Anamabra, in 1961. He graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1984 with a BA in philosophy. Obi had a prosperous banking career before going into politics.

He served as the chairman of Guardian Express Mortgage Bank, the chairman of Fidelity Bank Plc. He was also a member of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) and the Nigerian chartered Institute of Bankers.

After the courts invalidated Chris Ngige’s 2003 election victory, Peter Obi was elected governor on the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) ticket in 2006.

He was removed from office by the state house of assembly only six months after.

He filed a notice of appeal, and the impeachment was quashed, allowing him to serve from 9 February to 29 May 2007.

Peter Obi Biography

In new elections held that year, Obi was defeated by Andy Uba for the position of governor. He went back to court, claiming that his unfinished first term still had three years left to be served.

Obi received a favourable decision from the Supreme Court, and he completed the final three years of his governorship. After that, he went on to defeat former Central Bank Governor Charles Soludo in the 2010 elections.

Peter Obi was reputed to have been smart with money with both public and private funds during his tenure. In 2015, during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi served in his economic team and also as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

With all these experiences garnered, Peter Obi’s net worth according to multiple sources is estimated to $10 million dollars.

Peter Obi’s Presidential Race

The former Anambra State governor is undeterred in his presidential bid. The battle has heated up with the addition of Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former Kaduna State senator and the owner of Baze University, as his running mate.

The obedient movement has also collectively supported the duo in pushing their campaign in rural areas, even going so far as to contribute money to the party’s national campaign.

The election is in four months, and with Peter Obi, his running mate, and the Obidient movement experiencing massive growth and popularity, the chances of success appear to be high.

They praise Margaret Brownson Usen, call her “classy,” and claims she will be the best First lady.
  • They acknowledge Peter Obi’s role in rescuing the Anambra State from its debts.
  • While they frequently criticise other presidential candidates, they have nothing bad to say about Peter Obi.
