Raducanu: All Seems Unwell With Budding Talent

For the umpteenth time, Emma Raducanu was withdrawing from a tournament again.

For the umpteenth time, Emma Raducanu was withdrawing from a tournament again.

She is abandoning the Transylvania Open with a wrist injury. She has pulled out of the competition in Romania.

The 19-year-old Raducanu, whose father was born in Romania, reached the tournament’s quarter-finals last year.

Raducanu has struggled with injuries during her first full year on the WTA tour. She has tried to build on her 2021 US Open victory, but everything seems not to be working.

Most recently, she retired injured from her Korea Open semi-final against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko.

Raducanu, 67th in the women’s rankings, then played at the Ostrava Open but lost to world number 11 Daria Kasatkina, of Russia, in the first round.

Earlier this year, Raducanu was knocked out in the second round of Wimbledon by France’s Caroline Garcia.

“Sadly, Emma Raducanu is forced to withdraw from Transylvania Open due to a wrist injury. Get well fast, Emma! We’re looking forward to seeing you soon,” said tournament organisers on social media.

The Billie Jean King Cup begins in Glasgow on 8 November, and Great Britain captain Anne Keothavong will announce her line-up for the event on Monday.

Raducanu’s case has been more or less confusing and difficult to understand as she has failed to rise beyond mediocrity since her surprise outing at the US Open last year.

Many people have attributed it to loss of form and not having the mental strength to carry the weight of expectations on her, while others attribute it to various injuries.

Injured Emma Raducanu is out of the tournament in Romania.

Then 18-year-old Raducanu had come absolutely from nowhere to beat Canadian fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez who was then 19 to win the women’s singles title in New York

With the victory, Raducanu, became the first British woman to win a tennis Grand Slam singles title since 1977.

Raducanu also created a rare history. She became the first qualifier outside of the main draw of tennis grand slam history, (men or women) to come through the qualifying rounds to win a championship.

To make her victory more astonishing she didn’t drop a single set in three matches of qualifying and seven main draw contests.

She achieved this success in front of a beaming Virginia Wade. The last British woman to win a Grand Slam at Wimbledon in 1977. And also the last British woman to win the US Open in 1968.

Raducanu produced a superb performance in a thrilling final where she won the key moments.

It was only the fourth all-teenage women’s US Open singles final in the Open Era. And the last coming 22 years earlier at the 1999 finals. On that occasion, eagle-eyed 17-year-old Serena Williams outclassed then 18-year-old World number one, Martina Hingis to win the US Open. Serena had announced her triumphant entry into the world of big-girls tennis on that day.

Raducanu’s straight sets success made her the youngest Grand Slam champion since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004. And became the first US Open champion since Serena Williams in 2014 to win the title without dropping a set.

The World thought they were seeing a sensational teenager who was taking them by storm. And possibly bringing back memories of the old days. Days when certain teenagers burst into the limelight in delicious fashion.

But that hope she gave lot of fans cutting across the globe seems to be gradually fading.

She’s still young and we pray she overcome her injuries, regain her confidence back, and get back to her best. The teenager who put the world beneath her feet in the US Open of 2021
