Hackers steal money from over 1000 Nigerian bank customers

This information was disclosed in a statement issued by SP Hauwa Idris-Adamu, the spokesperson for Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos State. It comes after the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) previously raised concerns about the increasing incidence of bank fraud cases in Nigeria.

Additionally, in May 2023, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) included 7,552 account holders on the Bank Verification Number (BVN) watch list due to their involvement in fraudulent activities.

As per Idris-Adamu’s statement, the individuals possessing hacking skills specific to local banks were captured in a hidden location in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. This action followed a formal complaint submitted by a tier-1 Nigerian bank. Consequently, the investigation led to the successful tracking of two suspects, Yusuf Ademola, and Adesina Abiodun, to their undisclosed whereabouts in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State after they stole money from over 1000 Nigerian bank customers.

An excerpt from the statement n the hackers stealing from over 1000 Nigerian bank customers reads:

“…The suspects confessed to the crime that they have many syndicates all over Nigeria and that they use software to hack into customers’ accounts and move their money undetected from any bank they wish.

“However, the modus operandi of these fraudsters is to have a customer’s BVN linked phone number and bank alert for easy transfer of the money. Over 1000 customers’ accounts have been hacked and defrauded across the country…”

Furthermore, Idris-Adamu revealed that a thorough investigation into the incident of how the hackers stole money from over 1000 Nigerian bank customers revealed that the members of the syndicate originated from different parts of the country. Additionally, she emphasized that relentless efforts were being made to apprehend all individuals involved in these criminal activities.
