A 34-year-old woman named Zuku, has used her money to settle her own lobola (bride price) instead of leaving it for her husband, as par tradition.
In a conversation with News24, Zuku explained that when it was time to tie the knot, her boyfriend, a producer, she dated for 9 years had financial challenge and couldn’t afford to pay her lobola.
However, her husband was against the idea at first as it is his responsibility, as a man. But to Zuku, it just made sense especially as his family were still going to cover the wedding ceremony.

“If someone would’ve told me that at the age of 34, I would be paying my own lobola, I would’ve laughed. But yes, it happened – I fully paid my own lobola, and I won’t lie; at first, I was embarrassed,” she said.
Ever since she was a little girl; marriage, its custom and tradition had always been very dear to her heart. But, walking down the aisle with her wedding jingles has also been a big dream.
Zuku, an engineer with three qualification, has always known that her lobola would be a challenge. Her parents always said they were going to request a hefty amount for her lobola.
Zuku and her husband were not ready to start a marriage with debt. They both have no regrets as this ‘uncommon’ behaviour is what works for them financially.
Lobola is the bride price the groom family pays to the bride’s family. Traditional, it amounts to 6 cattles, but these days, families prefer to pay in cash.

Meanwhile, a woman’s day of joy turned to utter sadness after her husband cancelled their wedding on D-Day for a secret she hid from him.
The groom was fuming and furious after discovering on his wedding day that his bride-to-be already has two kids.
He threw caution to the wind and refused to be pacified by anyone as he walked out on his bride.
