8 ways to spot fake new Naira notes

A few days after the newly redesigned Naira notes were released for public use, fake notes have equally surfaced.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released the redesigned Naira currency in the denominations of N200, N500, and N1,000 on the 15th of December, but fake copies of the N1000 notes have also been in circulation.

How, then, can you know whether you’ve been handed an original copy of the redesigned Naira notes?

Fake money is currency produced without the legal sanction of a state or government, usually in a deliberate attempt to imitate that currency and so as to deceive its recipient.

Recognising a fake currency from an original requires technical understanding, as there are different pointers to look out for.

It is essential to note that several specific security features protect all Naira notes to enable the easy recognition of genuine notes

To identify a fake currency note, please take note of the following:

  • If the texture of the Naira note is softer than usual
  • If the image in it appears unclear
  • If the Naira note is lighter in weight.
  • If the gold foil on the right side is missing or peels off upon scratch
  • If its colour is soluble in water or any other liquid substances
  • If the paper becomes messed up when put in liquid substances
  • If it doesn’t have embossed-like ribbon thread
  • If it doesn’t show a shining denominational figure when placed under a mercury bulb

With the many reports of fake currencies social media users are reporting, it would be safe to say that counterfeit copies of CBN’s newly redesigned naira notes are already circulating in Nigeria.
