African girl becomes youngest mathematician set for PhD in US, breaks varsity record

Brilliant African mathematician, Ruth Ama Gyan-Darkwa, set the record as the youngest Bachelor’s degree holder in Ghana.

The young and smart girl became the youngest Bachelor’s degree holder in Ghana after graduating at age 17.

Ruth started her university education at the age of 13 at Nkrumah University of science and technology, Ghana.

I heard girls belonged in the kitchen

Although Mathematics is believed to be one of the most difficult subjects in the world, Ruth was able to find a way to excel in it.

One of her professors, Professor Abeiku Akora-Prah, described her success as exceptional and rare.

In order to pursue her Master’s and PhD, Ruth Ama’s father, Kwadwo Gyan-Darkwa, disclosed that his daughter had the assurance of admission to a university in the United States.

Ama said she thought girls only belonged in the kitchen. In her words:

“At first, I heard girls should be in the kitchen, whereas boys should be going to class. As far as I know of some women who have made it; so now, I will be like a motivation to the young ones that they should look up to me to see how far God has brought me in terms of my Academics.”

Meanwhile, a determined 75-year-old grandmother fulfilled her dream of furthering her education after she earned a master’s degree.

The woman identified as Notozi Jennifer Mgobozi bagged a Master’s degree from Walter Sisulu University, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Although Notozi Jennifer Mgobozi earned a Bachelor’s degree in the 1960s, her brother-in-law advised her to become a teacher.
