Agba chicken: Meet the oldest living chicken in the world who escaped death after being abandoned by mum

The oldest living chicken in the world, according to Guinness World Records, is a hen named Peanut from Michigan in the United States.

After barely escaping death when her mother abandoned her, Peanut is claimed to have lived for nearly 20 years.

The hen was born in 2002, making her 20 years and 304 days old as of March 1, 2023, according to the Guinness World Records.

Peanut is an old lady

She is a bantam Belgian d’Uccle/Nankin hybrid that Marsi Darwin, a retired librarian, has raised since birth.

Marsi, the owner said:

“Peanut is a doddering old lady now, but she has had quite a life,”

The chicken’s veterinarian, Dr Julia Parker, who first encountered her in 2003 as an adult hen, also confirmed her age.

Her mother left her

Marsi said that Peanut’s mother left the nest with all of the other chicks before she hatched.

The woman picked up the chilly egg to toss it away when she realized it was cold, only to hear it cheep as she did so.

Before being allowed to live with the rest of the flock, Peanut spent the first two years of her life in a cage in the owner’s dining room.

Marsi also disclosed that Peanut continued to lay eggs until the age of eight, which is a year or two longer than the typical layer.

She has grand and great-grand children

Throughout her lifetime, she produced countless grandkids and great-grandchildren and hatched a number of nests of eggs, but she is now too old to reproduce.

He also said that

“I’m sure she has outlived quite a few of her children,”

Peanut lived twice as long as a typical chicken, which has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years.

The oldest chicken to date was a Red Quill Muffed American Game from the US named Muffy, who clocked a remarkable 23 years and 152 days of life from 1989 to 2012.
