ASUU: El-Rufai issues warning to students over protest

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Tuesday warned students against blocking the Kaduna-Abuja road during the ASUU strike protest.

According to Daily Post reports, the Nigerian university students led by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), intend to extend their demonstration in Kaduna by blocking the Kaduna-Abuja highway.

This is in response to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the government’s failure to meet their demands.

The governor, who gave the warning in a statement issued by the State’s Commissioner for International Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan added that security agencies had been instructed on what actions they should take to guarantee that no individuals or groups engage in such behavior.

He described this plan as unacceptable and warned the people of the state to desist from such.

According to RipplesNigeria, the statement read,

The Kaduna State Government wishes to remind members of the general public that any move to block the Kaduna-Abuja road, or any route, in order to express dissatisfaction, is unacceptable and a prelude to breakdown of law and order.

The Ongoing ASUU Strike

The current ASUU strike began in February 2022 as a warning strike. It has however lasted 8 months with no positive conclusion from the government.

Students have grieved over the past few months on social media. But recently, they have begun conducting measures to demand a swift resolution of the Federal Government and ASUU strike issue.

Just last week, NANS shut down the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. They also organized a demonstration outside Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Monday.

Reports suggest that other states might follow suit to express their worries and request a speedy settlement.

The Kaduna State Governor further stated that whoever blocks the Kaduna-Abuja highway will be dealt with ruthlessly.
