Broda Shaggi Biography: Wife, Net worth, Secret to staying relevant

Broda Shaggi shows too much emotion in his skit, and there’s a name for it – overacting. This is when an actor goes overboard with his performance, making it seem forced. Funnily enough, his tendency to overact has not made his performance less realistic: he’s likeable and relatable.

This graduate of creative art surely knows the difference between overacting and bad acting and has mastered the art of the former. Bad acting is when an actor gives a wooden performance that lacks believable motivation. You can link that to one or two people in the industry, but not Broda Shaggi.

In recent years, there’s been an increase in his style of acting largely because of the popularity of reality shows and the need for actors to be more expressive.

Most times, these shows compel the participants to be very emotional in order to create drama for the viewers. This has made many people learn how to get noticed. Think of most Big Brother housemates, and you’ll understand our drift.

Broda Shaggi understands what we are saying and knows that an attempt to be dramatic and comedic can help to create a more interesting scene. It adds humour to his delivery and may make the scene one of the few scenes you remember. “Hello, how are you? Any questions about the day? Oya hit me!”

However, some audiences may find him distracting and even annoying. He’s unperturbed because he knows how to find that balance between overacting and bad acting. Him, and say, Mr Macaroni knows when to tone it down and when to turn it up. And that’s what makes them great at their craft.

We have a sneaking feeling you disagree with us. But then, it’s up to the director to decide whether Broda Shaggi or The Cute Abiola is overacting or just plain bad and screams: cut!

We present Broda Shaggi’s biography.

Broda Shaggi: Birth

Samuel Perry Animashaun, known professionally as Broda Shaggi, was born on July 6th 1988, the day 167 people were killed in the world’s worst offshore oil disaster. Life stretches between birth and death, and the distance (5,448 miles) between Ikene in Ogun State and Caledonia is just a breath.

His father has since taken his last breath, but his mother, who didn’t remarry, is still hale and hearty. Broda Shaggi has two brothers and is the first of three sons.

Broda Shaggi: Education

We have no information yet, on the identity of his primary and secondary schools. However, he read creative arts at the University of Lagos.

Broda Shaggi’s Comedy

He began performing comic acts while in UNILAG. But way before then, comedy chose Broda Shaggi at a tender age.

“Ever since I was a child, I always got compliments from people that I am hilarious,” he said.

“I joined the Nigerian comedy industry in order to leave my impact and also to make a difference. I have always dreamt of doing something creative and different from what everybody else has been doing, and that is how I came across the several characters I have developed through my skits.

“Although I recently shot into the limelight, I have been doing comedy skits for about five years. I actually started acting in comedy dramas while I was still a student at the University of Lagos.

“I would say that I was doing the regular style of comedy and skits, but that did not bring fame my way, so I was prompted to adopt the ‘Agbero’ style and it worked like magic.”

Agbero as Metaphor

An Agbero, a Yoruba word for tout, canvasses for passengers for commercial bus drivers at motor parks. In recent times, however, his activities now involve imposing ridiculous levies on bus drivers, motorcyclists, Keke drivers, and traders, whether hawkers or shop owners. A typical Agbero is armed with a cane, marker, and tickets.

Some have charms and dangerous weapons in their possession, depending on how volatile their location is. Watch him eat at the nearest buka, and you will be amazed at the amount spent on two wraps of amala, ewedu and gbegiri with assorted meat like Ponmo, Shaki, abode, and egufe.

He will then ‘wash’ it down with a drink of choice, most likely Action Bitters or 33-lager beer.

Samuel Animashaun paints a similar picture when the idea of Broda Shaggi came to him in December 2017.

“I was with my mechanic while he was fixing my car, and I overheard some guys talking. One of them asked the other to buy something for him, but his friend refused, so he jokingly asked the guy, ‘are you okay? Have you forgotten that you were once my apprentice’, in Yoruba,” he said.

“He sounded like a tout and I noticed everyone around was laughing because of the way he spoke and his mannerism. I liked the way he spoke, and that was how I got the idea. The next thing I did was to get a name that would suit the character. I thought of Musiliu, then Shaggi Don Baba, but eventually, I used Broda Shaggi.”

And he has stuck to that name ever since, though he distances his true self from this Chief Tout.

“In reality, that is not my lifestyle even though I play the role so well, and people may find it hard to believe me,” he said.

“As a trained actor, what I do basically is to create characters and make them look believable. Before the Broda Shaggi character became popular, I had created other characters. For instance, there was a character I created called Inspector Perry.

“It was the first character I created back when I was still in university and I uploaded the skits on Instagram as well. After that, I created other characters like Akani Ibadan and Lecturer Dele. All these characters came into existence before Broda Shaggi, but they never gained as much recognition.”

Broda Shaggi’s Movies

Before he became a social media comedian, he had been into acting. Broda Shaggi studied it in school, and immediately after graduating, he started acting in movies. He has worked with media outfits like ROK Studios and Africa Magic.

Broda Shaggi had been in Nollywood before he gained fame via social media. He acted in movies like Dear Mummy B and Unfinished Business. He was a part of the cast for Eniola Badmus’ Ghetto Breed movie.

However, all the roles he acted in are comic, which screams ‘one-dimensional’. Does it mean he cannot act in any other role aside from comedy?

“Actually, I can act in any role given to me,” he said.

“Back when I was at the University of Lagos, I acted in various stage plays, all the while I was studying. In fact, while I was in school, I had to take part in those stage plays in order to fend for myself. I did them to survive as a student. We were taught about music, visual art and theatre art.

“I was also into visual art, and that is how I honed my skills as a painter. Initially, I directed all my strength to my paintings, but I did not sell them as I expected, so I had to ‘change lane’ and embrace comedy.

“While I was ‘hustling’, I formed a group in school and it comprised about 10 of us. We went to various shows, and we were privileged to perform before dignitaries like the former governor of Lagos State and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We did this just to survive as students. I also write scripts and direct. I am saying all this to prove that I am not limited to Instagram alone.”

You’re in luck if you can’t have enough of the expressive Broda Shaggi in his short skits. He has featured in several Nollywood movies in roles over bloated drama required.

Some movies are Ghetto Bred (2018), Aiyetoro Town (2019), Fate of Alakada: The New Normal (2020), The Party Planner (2020), Namaste Wahala (2020), Dwindle (2021), Day of Destiny (2021), The Miracle Centre (2020), Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke (2022), and King of Thieves (2022).

Broda Shaggi’s Net worth

Broda Shaggi has an estimated net worth of $200,000. His skits, movies, music, endorsements, investments, properties, and other business interests, minus his liabilities, make up those estimated figures. He started from a humble beginning, though.

“When I started, it was with the advertisement of musicians who wanted to put their songs and needed my skits to help publicize the new projects,” he said.

“I charged them at an affordable price. Now I charge more because I put more work and creativity into my skits. Also, I need more people to act with me, and I have to pay for their services.”

We don’t know the number of houses or properties he owns in Nigeria and abroad. However, he lives somewhere in the Centre of Excellence!

Broda Shaggi and Social media

Who is Broda Shaggi without social media? The revolution began with the introduction of the global satellite mobile networks, GSM, in 2001. When the pioneer networks began operations, they met a total subscriber base of about 800,000 lines.

More than half of those lines belonged to Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), while fixed wireless operators owned the rest. And this was in a country of over 100 million people!

Today, from a subscriber base of less than a million, the nation now has 222.2 million active lines as of the end of 2022. This is according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In the revolution’s wake have come a thousand gains. The innovation has seen the rise of a new breed of school leavers and graduates who have carved a niche for themselves by being self-employed. For many comes a new way of doing business. And not a few these days transact business from the relative comfort of their homes using their smartphones.

“No social media, no Broda Shaggi”

Enabler

“Social media is very important because this platform made the Broda Shaggi character to be recognised all over the world,” he said.

“Social media is an enormous platform beyond what people see. While some people think it is just for posting pictures, others see social media as a gigantic market, their office. I remember when I started, people told me I would run out of ideas because I posted skits daily, but I did not listen to them because I saw it as my career; my job is to do comedy.

“Today, the messages I get are my source of motivation. For instance, there was a day I could not post some skits and by the time I got to my phone, I had received messages from people telling me how bad their day went, and they looked forward to my skits to make them happy.

“I had to apologise to them individually. So, I see social media as a big platform and my office. This is what I do every day.”

Conclusion

The ease of entry into skit making business should worry Broda Shaggi because it determines the likelihood that he will face new competitors. In economics, the ease of entry into an industry depends upon two factors: the reaction of existing competitors to new entrants; and the barriers to market entry that prevail in the industry.

The latter is not applicable here because there’s fair competition for all. The reaction to the former is the plan to stay relevant in the industry. And Broda Shaggi has one.

“When the foundation of your work is solid, it is going to be there forever,” he said.

“Yes, I know everything is with time, but as long as you know what you are doing, you can stay at the top forever. As long as I do the right things, I think I would remain relevant.”

As long as he continues to overact and age doesn’t take its toll, he will.
