In a tragic turn of events, Amarachi Ugochukwu, an employee of a commercial bank in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, has taken her own life. The incident, first reported by The Punch on Thursday, January 11, has cast a pall of grief and shock over Ugochukwu’s colleagues.

The news of her untimely demise has echoed through the workplace, leaving her coworkers grappling with the profound sorrow of losing a valued team member.

Female Banker left a note before engaging in the act

The unfortunate incident took place on Monday, January 8, within the premises of the bank where Amarachi Ugochukwu was employed.

In a written note, the 32-year-old woman attributed her decision to end her life to the challenges posed by the harsh economic conditions.

She Wrote:

Nothing is working in my life. My figures are low. My brain is clogged up. The economy is getting harder. My decisions are wrong. My mind is messed up. The future doesn’t seem bright at all. I see extreme hardship. I can’t bear the pain anymore.”

She continued:

“I’m sorry mum, I’m sorry dad, I’m sorry Nene, Okwe, Toto, Nazor, Chuchu, Ifunanya.”

Data from the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) reveals that Nigeria has one of the highest rates of self-harm in Africa. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the statistics indicate 9.5 cases of self-harm for every 100,000 people in Nigeria.

It was reported that Desola suffered untold violence at the hands of her father, Sunday Adeoye, and his wife and she finally decided to end it all by drinking insecticide. It was gathered that when Desola got home from summer school on Tuesday, her stepmother allegedly threatened her that when her father returned, he would pounce on her.

Desola, who was greatly troubled by this threat, sneaked out of the house and drank the insecticide kept in the house. She was reportedly rushed to a nearby private hospital, where she eventually gave up the ghost.
