History of First Bank

“First Bank” is more than a name.

It is an achievement.

The First Bank of Nigeria is the oldest bank in Nigeria, and they have maintained that prestige to date. Since it was founded in 1894, FirstBank has contributed steadily to building solid relationships, good corporate governance, and a thriving economy.

Sir Alfred Jones, a shipping magnate from Liverpool, founded the First Bank of Nigeria.

They commenced business on a small scale in Lagos, Nigeria, while the main office was located in Liverpool, England.

But at the time, they were not First Bank.

Their first name was the Bank of British West Africa (BBWA).

More on the Story:

  1. The Bank changed its name in 1957 from Bank of British West Africa (BBWA) to Bank of West Africa (BWA).
  2. Then in 1966, they merged with Standard Bank, UK, and adopted the name Standard Bank of West Africa Limited.
  3. More changes in nomenclature also occurred in 1979 and 2012 respectively.
  4. In 1979, they became First Bank of Nigeria Limited.
  5. One final time in 2012, the Bank changed its name again to FBN Holdings Plc.
