The remarkable lady, Islamiyat Ojelade, proudly shared her accomplishments on LinkedIn, explaining that she gained admission to and received scholarships for PhD programs at seven renowned American universities solely with her Higher National Diploma (HND) certificate.
In Nigeria, an HND certificate is granted upon the completion of a four-year academic program at polytechnic institutions.

Islamiyat earned her HND in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) from the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro in Ogun State, South-West Nigeria.
She distinguished herself at the institution, achieving an impressive cumulative grade point average of 3.89, making her the top graduate of the 2018 cohort.
Islamiyat confronted the bias against HND certificate holders in Nigeria, sharing her journey on LinkedIn. After finishing her undergraduate studies, she grappled with uncertainty about her next steps.
“I was fearful and uncertain about what to do after my bachelor’s degree. I mustered the courage to discuss my ‘big dream’ with various individuals, including friends, mentors, and professors.”
She noted that only a few individuals offered support, but ultimately, she received PhD scholarship offers from seven universities: Florida State University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, the University of North Texas, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Marquette University in Wisconsin.
Islamiyat made the decision to accept a PhD scholarship to pursue Chemistry at Florida State University in the United States.
