#NigeriaDecides2023: For Displaying Thumb Printed Ballots; Buhari, Others Contravene Secret Ballot Rule

Today, President Muhammadu Buhari violated the use of mobile phones and other photographic devices at voting cubicles.

After casting his vote in Daura, Buhari displayed his thumb printed ballot paper to the audience, saying he did so to inform the public of his loyalty to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Before now, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s spokesperson, Festus Okoye, had said “no one will be allowed to take his or her phone to the voting cubicle.” He added that officials of the ICPC, EFCC and other security agencies will be available to ensure that the law is not violated.

Aside from Buhari, Nigeria’s minister of justice, Abubakar Malami and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Kalu also displayed their thumb printed ballot papers.

Meanwhile, INEC has announced the extension period of voting for the Presidential and National Assembly elections to Sunday, 26th February 2023.

According to INEC, this was necessitated due to the level violence experienced and ‘tactical disenfranchisement’ (late arrival of election materials) in some areas.
