Students to Barricade Abuja Airport, Kaduna-Abuja Expressway Today Over ASUU Strike

Members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have announced their plan to block the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, and Kaduna-Abuja Expressway today, Wednesday, September 21.

The intended blockade is a result of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) insistent strike.

Remember that on Monday, September 19, the angry students also shut down the entrances to the local and international terminals of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, stranding travelers.

The Kaduna state commissioner for internal security and home affairs, Samuel Aruwan, responded to the students’ plans to block the Kaduna-Abuja expressway.

He stated that the state government was not denying citizens the right to express their discontentbut public security and safety must always come first.

The Kaduna State Government‘s released statement read, “The Kaduna State Government wishes to remind members of the public that any attempt to block the Kaduna-Abuja Road (or any routes) to voice displeasure is unacceptable and a precursor to the breakdown of law and order”.

In light of ongoing security operations covering the route and other areas of interest, the risk of blocking a strategic route like the Kaduna-Abuja Road is better understood. Therefore, citizens are strongly discouraged from participating in such processions.

Security personnel have been sent to the Abuja airport to maintain law and order throughout the student protest, according to Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria.
