The questions na die: Nigerian man posts a Standard 6 exam from 1953, challenges present graduates

A man with twitter handle, @OtunMuri posted a 1953 English test taken in the Nigeria’s western area.

The standard six back then is presently known as primary/basic six and the exam is for students about to graduate form primary school.

Otun however stated that some graduates will not be able to answer the questions correctly.

The first question required students to compose a letter to a friend who lives in a different city, that they would like to stay with him for a week.

The second question required the students to write a formal letter of application for an advertised job.

Another question asked the pupils to write a story about a marriage ceremony, the school sports, an interesting journey or something they have made, and how to make it.

Otun challenged graduates of universities saying that they will not be able to answer the questions.

He specifically wrote: 

“1953 Standard Six Examination Question. Some Bachelor degree holder of today may not answer the question satisfactorily.” 

Reactions: WAEC question of nowadays

The tweet of Otun gained a lot of reactions with many surprised at the type of questions that students were asked back then.

@Ohi Derek: Examination by the colonialists for the colonised, similar pattern continued till late seventies. The questions are interesting, and the question paper should be valued antiquity. 

@Timilehin Morighanfen: I’ve been writing letters from my primary school days. You can’t attend boarding school and not know how to write letters in my days where there were no access to phones.

Tinubu’s ‘Bala blu’ becomes an exam question in university 

In another story, Nassarawa state university added a question about Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s “bala blu bulaba” remark to its exam questions.

Tinubu, who is the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) mumbled, “a town hall, different from “balablu-blu-blu-bulaba” at an event in Imo in November 2022.

Young Nigerians against Tinubu’s bid for the presidency turned the aspiring leader’s blunder into a source of amusement online.
